My ultimate goal is that students can a) sort words accurately and b) tell me why they sorted them that way. This is also the type of sort I use when doing a mini-lesson with my students about their words. When the students receive new words, this sort is mandatory. ![]() Regular Sort – This is the student’s opportunity to begin exploring and categorizing the words in their sort by creating columns or groups of words. Once students have their list of words, here are three types of activities you could do with your words: ![]() I have been using this spelling program for two years now, and while it can start off slow, I have found it much more effective than simply giving students spelling words to memorize. Through categorizing words, students should deepen their understanding of phonics patterns and English spelling. The goal is that students, through a student-centered approach, create meaning around spelling rules by categorizing words, for example sorting words into three categories: CVC words like “pin”, CVCe words like “pine”, and rule-breakers (oddballs) like “have”. ![]() Word sorts are simply a set of words that fall into certain spelling patterns, sounds, or semantic (meaning-based) categories. ![]() Words Their Way is a developmental spelling program that has students work with level-appropriate word sorts in order to improve their understanding of the written language.
